This sculpture, in the shape of a narwhal tusk, narrates the story of Viking settlements in Iceland and Greenland, as well as their encounters with Inuit. It beings at the base with an image of the goddess Rán. Above her is a Viking ship with Odin, the god of war, at the helm. Higher up, three animals - symbols of the new land - are depicted: the walrus, falcon, and polar bear. Above them, figures representing the settlements of Iceland are shown as two men with swords, accompanied by their wives holding agricultural tools. The next register illustrates a woman harvesting grain, a man working the forge, and other men gathering resources from both land and sea. At the top of the tusk, scenes of Norse contact with Inuit are shown, depicting cooperative hunting and trading.
