The Inuit understood that all life needs air to live. Without air, life forms could not survive. The Inuit portrayed this understanding through ritual dances using masks, fashioned with long willow rods. Hoops were made along the willow rods at spaced intervals, to represent air bubbles. Within the sculpture are representations of sea mammals, such as seals, bears, fish and sea spirits. The Inuit knew that these natural elements were necessary for their survival.
