IN THE BEGINNING
This painting envisions the first contact between Inuit and Viking settlements in Iceland and Greenland. As Norse settlers arrived from Scandinavia, Inuit migrated from the Bering Sea through the central Arctic into Greenland. The imagery blends Viking myths - featuring Odin, Thor, and the sea goddess Ran - with Inuit symbols like a shaman with a drum, Sedna, and various animals and spirits. It reflects a time when both cultures may have shared similar worldviews, with lasting ties to the land that continue in Scandinavian and Inuit traditions today.
