Thor, son of Odin and god of thunder, is a central figure in the Germanic pantheon, known for his magical hammer that always returns when thrown. He was also revered by sea travellers, who offered prayers for protection on their journeys.
This sculpture reflects the ancient beliefs of early Icelanders. Thor is shown in a trance, holding a battle axe as he prepares for battle, seated within the outline of a polar bear symbolizing the "ice bear" of Greenland's northern waters. The reverse side features the full bear, carved with dragon heads, wolves, falcons, and mythologica beasts, representing the new animals of their Arctic world.
