SHAMAN'S DREAMS

$35,000.00Price
Size

An angakkoq (shaman) is a mediator between the human and the spirit worlds, called upon to heal the sick, ensure favorable weather, and guarantee successful hunts. Assisted by helping spirits, often those of animals, the shaman would transform into these spirits during rituals. The angakkog was especially sought when communication with Sedna, the goddess of sea creatures was needed. He would intercede on behalf of the people during harsh weather or times of famine.

In this sculpture, the shaman is depicted seated, leaning on a staff or walking stick. Draped in a bear skin, his body is adorned with images of birds, animals, and spirits. At the center of the back of the sculpture is Sedna's face, with carved images of sea creatures radiating from her likeness.
